Zell am See

Although only around 4 km from N to S, Zell is more town than village – one of the most charming of the Austrian resorts, with something to offer both winter and summer visitors.

Founded in the 8th century, its narrow cobbled streets and pedestrianised centre retain an old-world ambience. There are several buildings of interest, including the 16th-century town hall and centrally placed Stadtpfarr church

Location: Centrally placed, in the W Salzburg region. 33 mls SE of Kitzbuhel. 48 mls SW of Salzburg city and its airport. 240 mls SW of Vienna. 100 mls E of Innsbruck and its airport.
Position: In idyllic lakeside setting, on the W bank surrounded by wooded slopes and mountains; somewhat marred in places by the railway line which skirts the lake and passes through the town.
